A Future September 11th

Sometime in the future there will be an ordinary day in the first half of September.  That day will find me enjoying the last remnants of summer and the anticipation of autumn.  I'll be thinking that another birthday is almost here and remembering a loved one's passing.

On that ordinary day I won't feel the intensity of a nation in mourning.  The anniversary of the tragedy will be noted, but not overpowering.  That day isn't here yet.  Eleven years on, it's still on the minds and hearts of those it intimately touched and the security of people here and abroad is an ongoing struggle.

I made this aceo from clippings and copies of my original photos of the World Trade Centers and surrounding area.  Previous posts about the day and the area are here and here.

Another generation is a third of the way grown up hearing about September 11th in history books and documentaries.  Thank you to all the heroes of the day and since then.  You are valued and remembered.

As time puts distance between the immediate tragedy and the here and now, how has that distance affected you?

this is one of those days I will never forget. My oldest was 3 yo, and I was pregnant with the second. I lived in SF at the time, but we stood still that day ... waiting for another plane to hit the golden gate bridge. the day before there had been an 'incidence' at my daughters pre-k, and she left the building without an adult/ before we had arrived to pick her up. So for me ... this is the day I almost lost one of the most precious people in my life. I simply cannot understand how completely devastating it has been for those that did lose a loved one that day.

I remember that day all too well ... living in Florida, but I worked in that area many years ago. NYC was my city and I can't tell you how awful it made me feel. Called my daughter in California shouting ... we're being attacked, we're being attacked. I only wish we could have peace on earth, that's the only way humankind will survive much longer. So with that I wish Love and compassion to all.

I remember waking up, groggily turning on the TV and seeing this crazy movie playing with a plane crashing into a building ... clicked the remote for channel 8 to get the news and the same movie was playing???? Same for Channels 2 and 6 .. then it dawned on me ... this wasn't a movie ... this was reality .... I was stunned ...

I will always remember that day! I was just about to leave for work and the t.v. was on. I shouted at my mom and brother, an airplane just went into a tower in New York. They thought I was joking! Fantastic aceo my friend!

Thank you Cynthia, ArtSings, Karen Anne, and Stacy. We each lived in different parts of the country and Canada and it is something indelible after eleven years, the moment is fixed in each of us. Thank you all and thanks Lucy, it seems so small in the grand scheme, but I wanted to do it.
Yes, love and compassion to all.

Now that 11 years have passed it is still just as sad and painful, but the actual shock of what happened has lessened.

Paula, yes it's almost hard to believe it was that long ago.
